I wrote a monthly column for Sports Northwest Magazine in 2008 and 2009. Here are four of my favorite stories from that time.
“The Big Payout”
I’m still amazed that Longacres was shut down in 1992, then for three years there was no live horse racing in the Seattle area, then in 1996 it returned. The survival of the sport here through that time is nothing short of a miracle. Ron Crockett is the face of that miracle.
“Silence Saved the Storm”
Four smart, gutsy businesswomen stepped up (very quietly) and saved the Seattle Storm when the team appeared destined to be packed off to Oklahoma with the Sonics.
“Let’s Revive a Northwest Classic”
Hydroplane racing is link to this city’s sports past. In this piece I conjured up a few ideas (along with Pat O’Day) that might add sizzle to the sport.
“Ancient Ex-Mariners Defy Father Time”
An appreciation of the extraordinary careers of Randy Johnson and Jamie Moyer.
